The Meal

At church we have been studying the “upper room discourse,” the final instruction Christ gives the disciples before facing the crucifixion. This takes place in the Gospel of John as Jesus and the disciples are sharing the “last supper” together. Today in liturgical circle, this is celebrated as Holy Thursday.

It is the last time Jesus will teach, the last time he will foreshadow what is to come and it represents all of the anticipation of the Gospels. What would we have said or asked at that meal? How would our full knowledge of what was about to take place (crucifixion, resurrection) have shaped the intensity with which we listened to Jesus?

The very next day Jesus would be taken, beaten and murdered. All for us. Let us listen closely to his words today…
